Calgary city council will decide on a few items that could alter the short-term rental business in the city.
The potential legislation comes after a year-long study on such rentals by two researchers at the University of Calgary .
The study conducted focus groups among residents across the city, half of whom opposed the rise of such rentals and a third favoured them.
Airbnb Canada has expressed concerns about the potential legislation.
Howell suggests the city take a step back and mull over it some more before arriving at a decision.
The study commissioned by the city, too, offers a caveat: “Some caution is warranted in assuming that restrictive regulations used elsewhere have been effective.
Causal empirical evidence is sparse, and many regulatory tools have not been causally analyzed”.
