Frida Ghitis: Immigration dominated the U.S. political agenda in 2024 .
She says it was an election year in which the candidate who won the presidency, Donald Trump , made the issue the central axis of his campaign.
But 2024 was also a decisive year for the Democratic Party on immigration , Ghitis writes.
Ghitis says the past 12 months have seen a notable shift to the right in American immigration policy.
Texas 's SB4 law was set to go into effect on March 5 , but a federal judge blocked it.
The law was briefly activated on March 19 , but was halted hours later until further notice.
Since SB4 was stopped, at least six states have passed their own versions of the law.
So far, all of these laws remain blocked.
