Edmonton 's mayor says the city is set to become the first city in Canada to ban sale of knives in convenience stores.

Councillors made the decision after hearing from community members, business owners and the Edmonton Police Service about safety concerns.

In the past year , officers have seen a disturbing trend of convenience stores openly selling drug paraphernalia, weapons and contraband tobacco.

The bylaw will immediately take effect if council votes in favour at its next meeting.

It will then take two years for the bylaw to be fully implemented as licences come up for renewal.

The city said that is the only way they can be applied as licence holders renew licences.
