The discovery of Hendra foreshadowed three decades of emerging infectious diseases dominated by bat-borne zoonotic viruses including the emergence of the Nipah virus in 1998 , Sars in 2002 , Mers in 2013 , Ebola in 2014 and Covid in 2019 .

In December , to mark the 30th anniversary of the outbreak, more than 150 scientists from more than 20 countries converged on Geelong to attend the Hendra@30-Henipavirus International Conference .

Tremendous achievements have been made which led to a licenced vaccine for Hendra virus.

The research will be centred around prototype’ viruses so that the findings can be extrapolated into other related viruses in the family.

The ambitious “vaccine library’ approach is being adopted to pre-emptively develop vaccines against various prototype viruses before they cause large scale human infections.
