Liquid Air Battery Explained - Rival to Lithium Ion Batteries?
60% Informative
Matt Farrell talks to a company specializing in cryogenic energy storage, sometimes called liquid air batteries.
Liquid air energy storage is using energy to compress air down to a small space, and when you need energy, you release that air, letting it expand and turn a turbine to generate electricity on the way back out.
The energy efficiency of this process on its own, the energy in versus the energy out, it isn't that great.
But that's not the whole story with these systems.
When you layer in capturing waste heat and cold that's generated by the liquification process, you can drive that efficiency up to 60 to 70% .
Cryogenic energy storage hits the sweet spot at a large scale.
The key to modernizing our grid and transitioning off of fossil fuels, the key always comes back to energy storage.
Liquid air batteries make a very persuasive argument for themselves.
There's no cutting edge chemistry we need to wait for to make it viable, and it's taking advantage of what's right in front of us, or actually more all around us.
