A college student from Ohio was returning from her grandfather's funeral, her father says.

"The only way we will get through this is together," a church leader says.

"Heartbroken is an understatement," a guide service says.

The victims include four steamfitters from a Maryland union local.

"We ask that you pray for our family and friends and for all the other families that are suffering today ," the wife of one of the helicopter pilots says on Facebook.

The three soldiers were doing an annual night proficiency training flight, defense secretary says.
