In Florida GOP’s New Immigration Crackdown, a Familiar Play of Overriding Local Democracy

Florida Republicans are ramping up requirements that Florida ’s local officials cooperate with ICE .
Governor Ron DeSantis and legislative leaders were clashing on who should have the power to marshal this crackdown.
Critics say it will drastically scale up state preemption and harm immigrant communities.
Florida 's new immigration legislation would give DeSantis more leeway to use this power.
It defines noncompliance with federal immigration officers as a neglect of duty.
But it also specifies that the governor may suspend them from office.
Florida Immigrant Coalition : "He wants the power to execute his own immigration enforcement with unchecked power".
DeSantis called the bill “grotesque” and “weak, weak, weak’s” in a video posted to X deriding the bill.
The governor wanted his office to have the authority to monitor compliance.
Instead, the bill gave some of that authority to another statewide official: the commissioner of agriculture.
