The federal government's two-month GST holiday comes to an end Feb. 15 .
Retailers say the economic measure “did not move the needle” as a boost to B.C. business.
The tax holiday, unveiled by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last November as an inflation-fighting measure, was estimated to put $1.6 billion in consumers' pockets.
Simon Fraser University economist Steeve Mongrain said the tax break, which he estimated at $225 million across all consumers, would have a bigger impact if it were focused on the most vulnerable, low income residents.
The five per cent break was too small, too diffuse in the economy and didn't apply to durable goods, things like appliances and electronics, he said.
