Massive pumice raft events like this are relatively rare, occurring once every 10 years or so, but when they do, they can have a devastating effect on everyday lives and livelihoods.
Tokyo Metropolitan University carried out an unprecedentedly detailed survey of drift pumices from Japan , Thailand , and the Philippines .
Using samples from 213 different locations, they considered raft density, the size and roundness of individual pumiches, and biological species attached.
