Why Is Taiwan Building Its Own Submarines Now?
56% Informative
Taiwan christened the high Con class submarine Hall one of four on September 28th, 2023 .
It's the first indigenous design and construction, but it's full of foreign equipment and American weapons, specifically the Mark 48 advanced capability mod 6 torpedo can be shot here.
The submarine is constructed in cylindrical segments like you see here.
This is essentially a Taiwan version of what appears to be the Dutch walrus class.
And there is some influence of the Australian Collins class visible in this design.
So it's like they married those two submarines together, assembled it in Taiwan and put European and European systems on it with American weapons.
This is the high con class diesel electric submarine.
She is expected to start sea trials in 2024 and assuming those go well, she'll be in service in 2025 .
My opinion of the submarine is it's a Taiwan version of a Dutch walrus class with some Australian calling class influence.
The most significant limitation is that it's not air independent powered so it doesn't have AIP .
