It is just five years since the declaration of the Covid-19 pandemic, which brought the world to its knees.

It is 10 years since an Ebola outbreak in West Africa saw cases exported around the world, and brought the three countries at the epicentre to the verge of a humanitarian disaster and economic collapse.

Vaccines are our first line of defence when it comes to prevention, and the last word when the time comes to respond to an escalating outbreak or pandemic.

A failure to maintain investments in the essential pillars of health security, including vaccination, dooms us to repeat the catastrophic epidemics and pandemics of the past.

We must heed the lessons of history and make our front line of defence stronger.

We hear much about peace through strength. The same wisdom applies to our collective health security.
