Scientists from UNSW Sydney have located a potential new exoplanet -- a planet that orbits a star outside of our solar system.

The new planet is estimated to be 10 -16 times the size of Earth , with a predicted orbital period less than 16 days .

To date there are over 5500 known exoplanets confirmed by NASA , with trillions more predicted to exist.

Hot Jupiters were the first exoplanets we discovered, but we don't fully understand how they form.

Some are in the habitable zones of their stars, meaning they could potentially have water on their surface.

Further observations will help to narrow down exactly what kind of secondary planet is interfering.
