USS Tennessee was the first battleship built for the US Navy in the early 20th century .

She had a main battery of 12/14 inch Mark 4 guns and four triple turrets.

She was also armed with four Mark 10/3 inch guns for anti-aircraft use and 221 inch torpedo tubes fitted with Mark 7 Bliss Levitt torpedoes.

USS Tennessee was dispatched to the Bismarck Archipelago in March 1944 to decimate Japanese bases in the area.

The battleship provided direct fire support for the Marines during the Battle of Saipan and the capture of Tinian and Guam .

The Marines stormed Pellalu on September 16th, 1944 to fight Colonel Kunio Nakagawa 's 11,000 men.

USS Tennessee would see combat at Liti Gulf Sur , GAO Strait, Yuojima and Okinawa before being sold for scrap in 1959 .

She remains one of the few U.S. Navy vessels that saw combat in most of the Pacific campaigns, from the bombing of Pearl Harbor to the last Japanese defence at Okinawa .
