A new pattern of warming oceans in the eastern Pacific , west of South America , has sent sea temperatures soaring to more than 5 degrees above average.

It’s uncertain how long the warming event will last, but the possibilities range from one that lasts a few months to an event that persists much longer and grows stronger.

If it does persist, this new development could reduce the odds of another hyperactive hurricane season in the Atlantic .

The event was forecast at the time to be short-lived, with a 3 -in-5 chance it would last through April .

The WMO said Thursday that there’s a 60 percent probability of conditions shifting to ENSO-neutral during the March -to-May period this year.
