The 100th Bombardment Group was ordered to deploy to the United Kingdom in May 1943 , ready or not.
The group was thrust into the 8th Air Force's bombing campaign against German soil.
The men admitted later that they were under trained and not as good as they thought they were.
The Hondas flew more missions against industrial targets and airfields deep in Nazi territory.
Their missions seemed cursed, and before the summer was over, the 100th Bomb Group had earned a rough nickname, the Bloody 100th .
In late 1943 , the unit got a chance to redeem themselves for the mission to strike U boat pens in Nazi occupied Norway .
Despite heavy losses, the pilots refused to be grounded.
The bloody 100th embarked on a mission to raid Munster , a German stronghold that controlled industrial and rail connections.
Just two months after the tragedy over Regensburg , the group faced one of its final cursed battles of the war.
Over 700 airmen were lost and 177 aircraft destroyed.
