B-24 Liberator – The .50-Caliber Gunship That Dominated the Skies
73% Informative
The B-24 Liberator was one of the first heavy bombers employed by the Allies during World War 2 .
It fought alongside the iconic Boeing B17 Flying Fortress across all continents.
Of the 18,000 models produced during the war, around 13,000 were used by the US Army Air Forces , making the Liberator the ultimate symbol of American industrial might.
Each compartment could hold up to 8000 worth of bombs and the bombays retracted into the fuselage when open instead of unfolding into the air.
The B-24 was equipped with 1050 caliber Browning M1919 machine guns that required a crew of 10 to be adequately manned.
The aircraft saw action in Midway , Wake Island , Guadalcanal , the Philippines , and many more crucial battles of the Pacific .
