A Day in the Life of the Knights Templar: The Elite Fighting Force of the Medieval Times
54% Informative
In 1099 , Christian armies took Jerusalem from Muslim control during the Crusades.
Around nine years later , a new military order emerged led by a French knight named Hudepien .
Called themselves the Poor Fellow Soldiers of Christ and the Temple of Solomon .
At first , the order was small and poor.
They guarded the roads in and around Jerusalem , protecting Christians from bandits.
When not at war or in combat training, they were just like any other order of monks, and their day consisted of work and prayer.
King Philippe the 4th of France arrested 5000 rich members of the Templar order in 1307 .
Arrested them after the fall of Jerusalem to Saladin and his Muslim forces.
Charged with heresy, being kissed by another Templar on the mouth, lower spine and navel whilst naked during the initiation ceremony.
Charges included worshipping cats and excusing theft and perjury if it benefited the order.
