Gene Hackman: How Alzheimer's left him alone in his final days

74% Informative
Gene Hackman , 95 , and his wife, Betsy Arakawa , 65 , were found dead in their Santa Fe , New Mexico , home in February .
The actor, who suffered from advanced Alzheimer's disease, didn't make any calls and missed meals.
Medical experts say it's possible he didn't even realise his wife was dead in the home where he was living.
Experts say he likely went through stages of confusion and grief, trying to wake her up before the disease caused him to become distracted or too overwhelmed to act.
It's a lot to shoulder, says a behavioural scientist who researches ways to support caregivers.
"With the aging of a population, we also simultaneously have a shrinking of the number of people in the family, number of children, or relatives who live nearby," she said.
