Alberta spending millions in irrigation infrastructure to grow agriculture industry

Irrigation industry contributes $3.6 billion annually to Alberta ’s GDP and represents about 20 per cent of agri-food sector GDP.
In recent years , hundreds of millions have been invested in Alberta 's irrigation systems.
In 2024 , $19 million was allocated to the program, and 14 projects have “begun or progressed” since the funding was announced.
Irrigation districts have to make sure farmers have enough water to meet their changing requirements but also need to look at future expansion opportunities.
“A little bit of it goes into protecting our risk to drought and risks to our water supply situation,” said Gallagher .
