GIJN spoke to women from different parts of the world about their journeys in data journalism.
For International Women’s Day this year , we asked women to share their experiences in the field.
In the demographics section of the 2023 State of Data Journalism survey, 49% of respondents identified as men, 48% as women, 1% as genderqueer.
Data journalist Purity Mukami says women bring empathy, sensitivity and diverse perspectives to the field.
Helena Bengtsson , the data journalism editor at Gota Media , started out in the 90s and says she is generally “not very fond of gender generalizations” She emphasizes the importance of a gender perspective in data analysis.
Having women in data journalism will “challenge systems, expose inequalities, and push for change” Gicheru says data journalism is not just about numbers but it’s about power.
Crucianelli says one way to overcome these systemic problems is to encourage more data journalism across the profession.
