Texas lawmakers and an advocacy group harshly criticized a charter school network that has paid its superintendent up to $870,000 annually .
The criticism came after ProPublica and the Texas Tribune published a story last week about Valere Public Schools .
Lawmakers brought up the story during a critical Texas House of Representatives hearing on March 6 to discuss how much funding the state should provide traditional public and charter schools.
Lawmakers have submitted at least five bills that would restrict superintendents’ salaries.
Most would not have applied to the vast majority of Cavazos ’ compensation because the proposals don’t limit bonuses.
“Otherwise, it’ll continue to be obscured” The Valere School Board has so far stood behind its decisions.
